3 Basic Principles of Interior Design

Have you ever done some remodeling or redecorating work on your home only to find out your choices didn’t quite work like you thought they would? Typically, this happens because the average homeowner is not well-versed in the basic principles of design. So, even when you think something looks nice in the store, it doesn’t always end up working with the rest of your home. At Booher Remodeling Company, we have an entire design team to help you design beautiful bathrooms and kitchens, and today, we’re discussing the three most basic design principles for you to consider.

1. Balance

Every interior designer understands the importance of balance when designing a room. To better understand how to balance a room, think about the visual weight of your space, and how to divide it evenly into two sides. This doesn’t mean that your room has to be perfectly symmetrical to “work”, rather, that you can choose a type of balance that appeals to you to create a balanced space. The main types of balance are radial, asymmetrical, and symmetrical. Once you have this goal in mind, it can be easier to make design choices moving forward.

2. Emphasis

After balance is achieved, many designers move on to emphasis. Typically, this means choosing a focal point in the room to grab attention and then using other elements in the room to highlight it. Whether it be a central piece of furniture, an accent wall, or a fabulous chandelier, your focal point will be what people notice first when walking into your room, so make sure it makes a great first impression!

3. Contrast

Finally, we like to use contrast to make a room more interesting. Typically, we are able to achieve contrast by using space, form, and color. Basically, you want to add visual interest by purposefully mixing and matching items that feel opposite to each other. Choose to use both stone and wood, or perhaps a rectangular couch and a circular mirror. The options are limitless.

At Booher Remodeling Company, we pride ourselves on superior contracting skills as well as the ability to design beautiful spaces. Let us help you put these design principles into action in your Indianapolis home by contacting us today at (317) 852-5546.
