At Booher Remodeling Company, we have an entire design team dedicated to staying current on kitchen and bathroom design trends. We love seeing the creativity of different styles emerge each year, and bringing them to life in our awesome clients’ homes. However, there are a few trends that we’ve seen in recent months that may not be the best ideas to implement. Below, we’ve listed our top three trends that we generally do not recommend.

Bathroom Design Trends to Reconsider

1. Ornate Tile Designs

Detailed and unique tile designs can be a fun way to bring your bathroom design to the next level. Patterns like herringbone, basketweave, and windmill are all the rage across the Pacific Northwest, and can be found all over Pinterest. However, laying these types of tile designs is a difficult process to get right, and are a bold choice that might not add to your resale value. If you are dead set on an ornate tile design, we would recommend it only for your forever home and only to be done by a professional tile contractor.

2. All White Everything

The combination of white subway tile and light-colored marble is a gorgeous option that homeowners love to see in their bathrooms. However, they don’t stay gorgeous for long, as they are extremely difficult to maintain and keep clean. To use this style in a more functional way, we recommend opting for a dark colored grout, like grey or black, or selecting a light-colored tile that has flecks of other colors. Darker colored grout does not show stains as easily and can help to add dimension to an otherwise simple bathroom.

3. Wood Accents

Adding wood to any space instantly adds warmth and a rustic look. However, while we love the natural look of wood, it can be difficult to clean, especially in a bathroom. With all that moisture, your wood isn’t going to be beautiful for long. If you do wish to add wood to your bathroom, keep it away from the shower, sink, and toilet areas, and be sure to treat the wood with a water-resistant protective coating. An alternative, less stressful option would be using a vinyl tile to mimic the look of wood in an easy-to-clean, water-resistant way.
