3 Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe During Construction

Remodeling is hard on the whole family. Whether you’re planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel, it’s going to uproot your family and mess up your kids’ routines for a bit. At Booher Remodeling Company, we strive to complete home renovation projects without too much disruption; however, there are a few safety practices we recommend implementing during a remodel.

1. Communicate Clear Boundaries

Kids are curious by nature and we wouldn’t want it any other way! Your young kids will likely be fascinated by the construction work happening in their home and become tempted to take a closer look. That’s why we recommend having a family conversation about the importance of staying away from work areas and power tools. Your kids should have a clear idea of what areas in the home they are not allowed to explore. Try setting up physical and signage barriers at the entrances impacted by the construction and make sure your kids understand what those barriers mean.

2. Consider Relocating

If you’re remodeling several areas of your home at once, it may be wise to consider moving out during at least some of the project. The remodel will go more quickly if your family is out of the way, and your kids won’t be in any danger of wandering into a construction zone. You’ll also be able to maintain a more normal schedule as you won’t have any construction-related interruptions throughout the day. If you have kids in your home, relocating can prevent a lot of trouble, confusion, and transition stress.

3. Plan Alternative Routes

If relocating isn’t an option for your family, you will need to plan how you will use the rest of the house while one section is remodeled. For example, if you’re remodeling the kitchen, you will need to make sure there are alternatives in the main area of the house to use as an emergency exit. Likewise, if your main entrance is off-limits due to the remodel, you’ll need to be sure your alternative entrance is safe for heavy traffic. Does this alternative exit route have solid walkways, railings on stairs, and good lighting for evening use? Planning ahead is an easy way to avoid accidents and keep your family safe.
