5 Home Remodeling Tips & Tricks

Many Indianapolis residents have been putting off their home-remodeling projects to try to avoid added stressors, inconvenience, or mess within the home. However, with these five tips from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), home remodeling might be a little less stressful.

1. Set a budget early.

Many home-remodeling projects get stressful when homeowners don’t properly budget for the project. Don’t be caught off guard when the contractor hands you the bill! Establish a home-remodeling budget, and make sure you and your home improvement contractor stick to it (even if that means waiting on some features you could add at a later date).

2. Take your time finding the right home-remodeling contractor.

Don’t be in a rush to hire a home-remodeling company. Do your research, check out customer reviews, and gather references from friends and family members in your area. You’ll also want to make sure your home remodeler is insured and familiar with local building codes.

3. Consider space-saving solutions instead of adding on.

Adding space with a room addition or basement finishing can cost quite a bit—and take longer. If you want to have more space (or give the illusion), put on your creative hat and consider other space-saving solutions. Adding shelving or built-in storage (or just redesigning the flow of your space) can work wonders.

4. Choose neutral colors.

Whether you’re planning a kitchen remodel or bathroom-remodeling project, consider classic paint colors that withstand the test of time. Neutrals can easily be incorporated into any style, and you can always add pops of color in décor or other remodeling details.

5. Think long term.

Know why you want to embark on a home remodeling project. If you plan to stay in your home, you can choose more custom features geared toward your lifestyle and preferences. However, if you’re fixing up your home to sell, you’ll want to minimize home remodeling costs and focus on projects that will help you sell your home and boost resale value.
