Building a Home Wine Cellar

Have you ever dreamed of having a wine cellar in your home? Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur and collector or simply a wine enthusiast, it is possible to create the perfect spot in your home to hold your reserve.

Optimal Wine Cellar Conditions

Wine cellars require the right temperature, light, and humidity in order to provide optimal conditions for storing your collection. You will want to work with a contractor who can convert your space while ensuring that the cellar conditions do not affect the rest of the house. Temperature control is one of the most important aspects of the wine cellar since temperature fluctuations can affect the wine’s aging process. According to Fine Wine Reserve, the ideal temperature for storing wine is between 52 and 58˚F. Light control is vital when cellaring wine since wine is very sensitive to light. Ambient lighting will be necessary, but bottles should always be kept away from bright lights and direct sunlight which can alter the wine’s taste. Humidity control is also key to proper wine storage. Prime humidity levels in a wine cellar should consistently be between 60 and 80 percent in order to keep corks from drying out. This is a level much higher than you would want in the rest of your home.

Selecting a Location

Your home’s design as well as the size of your collection will determine where your home wine cellar or storage area is located. In the majority of homes, the basement is the best place because it naturally provides better cellaring conditions. This can be completed on its own or as part of a larger basement renovation.  If you do not have a large area to spare or if you simply do not need an extensive cellar, consider converting a large walk-in closet or the space under the stairs into a wine storage area. Finally, if a cellar just isn’t necessary, you could simply have a specialized wine cabinet installed in your kitchen or dining room as part of a kitchen renovation. Whether you want to recreate the great wine cellars of Europe in your Indianapolis-area home or simply convert a small zone to store your collection, the professional contractors at Booher Remodeling Company will be happy to work with you to transform your vision into reality.
