Design Ideas: Kitchen Backsplash

The kitchen backsplash has been a key design element of the kitchen for several decades, one that provides function as well as style and beauty. Trends have come and gone throughout the years but the basic function of the backsplash remains the same: to protect the wall behind your countertop workspace and make for easy cleanup. Even though its main job is to get splattered, kitchen backsplashes can be beautiful and artsy, and can give your kitchen that extra “something special” that represents your unique design aesthetic. For inspiration for your next kitchen upgrade project, here are some kitchen backsplash trends from the remodel experts at Booher Remodeling Company.

Take It to the Ceiling

Who says that your backsplash has to be limited to the wall space between the countertop and the bottom of the cabinetry? To make a statement with your tile and to be on trend for 2019, take your backsplash all the way to the ceiling on open walls and in between cabinets. Ceiling-height backsplashes create a focal point for your kitchen while also brightening up your workspace in a modern and unique way.

Large Subway Tiles

Subway tiles are here to stay but why not mix it up and opt for a larger size than the standard 3×6″ tiles? Larger subway tiles provide the classic clean look that homeowners love, but with an extra element of intrigue. A large-format subway tile backsplash can be especially helpful for a small kitchen as the large tiles create the perception of space.

Interesting Finishes and Patterns

The trend of more neutral countertops like quartz or marble has inspired a backsplash trend that spices things up. If your countertops are a solid color and don’t have much of a pattern, you can get really creative with your backsplash without making the space look too “busy”. Consider unique tile patterns such as chevron, herringbone, Moroccan fish scale, and laser-cut tile. You can also opt for new and different finishes such as glossy and reflective, rustic and country, aged and weathered, or add a touch of luxury with the natural stone look.

As you can see, the kitchen backsplash trends of 2019 leave a lot of room for creativity, color, and your own unique style.
