How to Choose Kitchen Countertops

When a guest walks into your kitchen, the first thing they notice is most likely your countertops. Are they looking a little outdated or worn down? Are they starting to show the wear and tear that comes with heavy duty cooking? Our team at Booher Remodeling Company knows that it can sometimes be overwhelming to consider updating your kitchen, so we’re here to help you make the decision easier.

Durability

The first thing to consider when choosing a material for your countertops is how exactly you use them. The kitchen tends to be a very high-traffic area; not only do we spend meal times there, but many times the countertop doubles as a homework station. Is your family the type that does everything in the kitchen, or do you tend to eat and work elsewhere? The answers to these questions can help you determine how important durability is to your choice.

Maintenance

The next thing to think through when choosing a countertop material is how much maintenance you’re willing to put into it. For example, granite needs to be regularly resealed, and marble is a softer stone that scratches easily, so you need to be more careful with it. If you know your countertop is going to take a beating and you don’t want to put much work in, engineered stone is probably your best option. Our design team can help you go through all of your choices and really understand what exactly you will need to do to maintain them.

Budget

Depending on the size of your kitchen, your countertops could be a very large part of your budget, especially if you have a large island or bar area. Laminate is the most budget-friendly option, and there are now several laminates that mimic the appearance of stone. Granite and quartz materials tend to stay around the middle of the budget scale. And finally, marble, stainless steel, and concrete are the most expensive.
