Is a Kitchen Island Sink Right for You?

At Booher Remodeling Company, our design team gets asked all the time how best to utilize the space in the kitchen island. Should the space be used simply for its countertop space, or would the space be better used for the sink? To answer these questions, our team is discussing everything you need to know about kitchen islands, so you’ll know if it’s the right choice for you.

Functionality

Many homeowners love the functionality that an island sink brings to their kitchen. Perhaps you’ve heard of the “working triangle” or the “kitchen zone”? Basically, the working triangle ties together your sink, cooktop, and fridge so they are all within easy reach. The triangle shape is easier to pivot around than if these three elements were in a straight line or on opposite sides of the kitchen. Therefore, having your sink in your island is a great way to achieve this working triangle, which makes day-to-day use of the kitchen much more optimized and functional.

Open Concept

Another popular reason to have a sink in the kitchen island is for homeowners looking to optimize their open concept design. If your kitchen and living room share one large area, the space is better utilized if you can look out into the living room instead of having your back to it. This way, you’ll be able to look out into your home while prepping meals or washing dishes, and if you are entertaining, you won’t miss any of the party while you work at the sink.

Two Sinks

Finally, some homeowners choose to include a sink in their kitchen island because they want two sinks. If you have the space and love to cook and host, then you’ll love having two kitchen sinks. While someone is prepping for the first course, someone else can be doing dishes. It makes the workflow easier and the work gets done faster.
