Most kids love to help out in the kitchen, as long as it’s made to feel fun and rewarding. Often, all it takes is an invitation and they will come running to join in on dinner duty. If you are undertaking a kitchen remodeling project, this is the perfect time to create a family-friendly space where your kids are comfortable and where you all want to spend time as a family.

What are the benefits of children helping out in the kitchen?

  • They learn essential life skills. Not only are they learning about food and cooking, working in the kitchen teaches basic math principles and develops new vocabulary as well.
  • Spending quality time together making and sharing meals and snacks can solidify family bonds.
  • In the long term, youngsters who spend time in the kitchen will learn to clean up after themselves and to appreciate the work that goes into feeding them.
  • Little ones learn independence and confidence with each new accomplishment in the kitchen. And confident kids are likely to become children who take their chores seriously and help out more around the house.
  • Picky eaters who help plan and prepare their food have more buy-in and are therefore more likely to develop a broader palette.
  • Children who learn about good nutrition early on in life carry that information along with them as they grow and are more likely to make healthy choices as teens and adults.

How can I make my kitchen more child-friendly?

  • Choose kitchen countertops in non-porous, stain and scratch resistant materials.
  • If offering a lower work surface isn’t possible, having a stool to stand on or a small table to work at is a good alternative.
  • Kitchen islands offer extra seating and encourage kids to hang out, do their homework, or just chat.
  • Make sure your chairs and stools are covered in easy-to-clean, stain-resistant fabric.
  • Place the microwave where they can reach it; you don’t want them reaching above the stove to heat up their lunch.
  • A side-by-side or French door refrigerator makes it easier for your kids to get what they need as it has lower shelves.
  • Having appliances such as ranges, ovens and dishwashers with knobs and buttons within reach of very young children may not be a good idea. Some appliances have child safety features and locks; definitely worth looking into!
